SHIEC Goes to Washington

The Strategic Health Information Exchange Collaborative (SHIEC) announces move to a new national office

in the Wharf District of Washington, DC

Increased discussions with policy makers, especially

regarding COVID-19, spurs move.

Washington, DC (June 25, 2020) – The Strategic Health Information Exchange Collaborative (SHIEC) has announced that it has moved its national office to Washington, DC. The new office in the Wharf District at 800 Maine SW is minutes away from federal and Congressional offices.

SHIEC, representing America’s health information exchanges (HIEs) is increasingly engaged in the national discussion of health information sharing and infrastructure, according to Kelly Hoover Thompson, SHIEC CEO. The move comes at a time when HIEs are engaged in receiving, aggregating and disseminating COVID-19 test results and working with state and local health departments to monitor and respond to the pandemic.

“In the last few years, we have increased our interaction and partnerships with federal officials and policy makers regarding information sharing and the growth of our national health information infrastructure,” Thompson said. “This move will expand that valuable work and further our advocacy work in support of America’s HIEs. America’s HIEs are a critical part of our national health information infrastructure, ensuring more complete information is available when and where patients seek care.”

The move to the DC office follows a rapid period of growth in size and activity for the national collaborative. When SHIEC was formed in 2016, it represented just 18 HIEs. Today, SHIEC includes 81 HIE members and 61 Strategic Business and Technology members. SHIEC HIE members today serve more than 95 percent of the U.S. population. ?SHIEC HIEs have been engaged in significant information sharing that is enabling more informed clinical decision making, according to Thompson. Last year SHIEC HIEs shared 3.3 billion messages, including 2.15 billion encounter messages and nearly half a million ADT alerts (hospital admission, discharge or transfer alerts).

The Strategic Health Information Exchange Collaborative (SHIEC) is the national collaborative representing health information exchanges (HIEs) and their strategic business and technology partners. SHIEC member HIEs enable the secure exchange of patient information to improve the quality, coordination, and cost-effectiveness of healthcare locally, regionally and nationally. SHIEC includes nearly 80 HIE organizations that together cover more than 95% of the United States population. SHIEC advocates on behalf of the member organizations to ensure their needs are represented in nationwide conversations about critical healthcare issues, including health IT, health data sharing and stewardship.
